Jennifer Lopez and Shakira Confirm Super Bowl 2020 Performance

Jennifer Lopez and Shakira—the powerhouse Latina team-up you never knew you needed. Now, both pop superstars are joining forces for the Super Bowl halftime show for 2020. They confirmed it on Twitter, accompanied by official promotional snapshots for their upcoming performance. “This is happening 02.02.20,” tweeted JLo, while Shakira posted, “Get ready 🌎 02.02.20”.

For decades now, the Super Bowl halftime show has served as a huge platform for American artists to perform live in front of the entire country. The championship American football match is usually one of the biggest TV events of the year, even amidst awards season in the entertainment industry. For next year, they’re making history with an all-Latina line-up as the headliners. In their more than 50-year history, only two other Latin artists have performed during the event. Legendary pop icon Gloria Estefan has it done thrice (1992, 1995, and 1999. And Enrique Iglesias also did it during 2000 but as a part of a group of artists that year.

Earlier this month, rumors started circulating that organizers were eyeing Jennifer Lopez as the 2020 headliner. In fact, she herself tried to die them down during her interview at SiriusXM with Hoda Kotb. In a playful segment wherein she’d either have to answer the host’s question or shoot money out of a machine, Kotb asked the pop superstar about the rumors. Instead of shooting money out, JLo simply giggled and said, “I don’t know!”. It was the last time she publicly addressed them before confirming her forthcoming headlining gig on Twitter recently.  Now that the news is finally out, Lopez has since changed her tune and expressed her excitement for her Super Bowl gig. “Ever since I saw Diana Ross fly off into the sky at the Halftime Show, I dreamed of performing at the Super Bowl. And now it’s made even more special not only because it’s the NFL‘s 100th anniversary, but also because I am performing with a fellow Latina.  I can’t wait to show what us girls can do on the world’s biggest stage.” she shared in an official press release. The singer subsequently posted on Instagram as well, with the caption, “Going to set the world on 🔥🔥🔥,”.

Meanwhile, Shakira also expressed her own elation in another official press release. She stated, “I’m so honored to be taking on one of the world’s biggest stages in the company of a fellow female artist to represent Latinos and Latinas from the U.S. and all over the world — and to top it off, on my birthday! This is a true American dream and we are going to bring the show of a lifetime!”. And similarly to Lopez, she also posted her official Super Bowl image on Instagram, during her birthday no less. “It doesn’t get any bigger than this! So excited about getting on that #SuperBowlLIV #PepsiHalftime stage! 🤩🔥 @jlo #nosvemosMiami #happybirthdaytomeee” she captioned her post with.

Super Bowl LIV will take place on February 2, 2020, at Miami’s Hard Rock Stadium. Fans can watch it on Fox. Halftime performers Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will follow in the footsteps of other superstar divas. They include the likes of Gloria Estefan, Madonna, Janet Jackson, and Beyoncé Knowles, among many others.
