From America’s Sweetheart to pop culture villainess to political activist, Taylor Swift has got quite a life. And now, fans will get the rare opportunity to look more into it with a new documentary on Netflix. Entitled “Miss Americana,” the trailer for it just dropped and some bits already show Swift in a completely different light.

By the first few shots alone, the trailer already peeks into a side of Taylor Swift she rarely shows to her fans. “Just gonna go have fun. No one out there that I know in the audience actively hates me. Not get dead-faced…” she tells her mom before going on stage. An unseen voice asks her, “Ready to do this?”. To which, she shakingly replies, “Ready… totally ready!”. Evidently nervous and almost frightened, the pop star featured in this scene seems far from the confident songstress people see on stage. This bit alone shows just how deep the documentary dives into Swift’s personal and professional lives.
Directed by Lana Wilson, whose documentary credits include “After Tiller” and “The Departure,” this new Netflix release looks into how Swift transformed herself in the past few years. Throughout her career, the pop star received constant criticism, from her long list of famous partners to her “squad” that mostly featured models and celebrities. As a result of all of that, she revealed that she decided to hide for one year, believing that’s what the people wanted. “Nobody physically saw me for a year. And that was what I thought they wanted. I have to deconstruct an entire belief system. toss it out and reject it!” she confessed. Additionally, the title, “Miss Americana,” touches on two new points in Taylor Swift’s new approach to her career. The first is that the phrase is part of a title of a track in her latest album, “Lover,” which is “Miss Americana & The Heartbreak Prince”. The second, on the other hand, is the pop star’s new foray into the American political arena. As they explicitly show in the trailer, the documentary also sees how Swift made the decision to dip her toes into current politics and use her voice for activism. Even though, she knew, such a move will have consequences in her career.
“Throughout my whole career, label executives would just say: ‘A nice girl doesn’t force their opinions on people. A nice girl smiles and says and waves and says thank you.’ I became the person everyone wanted me to be.” Swift recalled. “I wanna do this,” she exclaimed, “I need to be on the right side of history.” Last year, upon promoting the release of “Lover,” she became an active voice for the LGBTQ+ community. Even speaking out against politicians in her home state of Tennessee whose views and policies endanger those in the community. “To celebrate but not advocate felt wrong for me. Using my voice to try to advocate was the only choice to make.” she once said. “Miss Americana” will premiere on Netflix on January 31, 2020. Apart from Swift herself, other celebrities who will appear on it include her “Me!” collaborator Brendon Urie and boyfriend actor Joe Alwyn. The star-studded cast of her “Need To Calm Down” music video might possibly appear in it as well. Share your thoughts and reactions of the trailer in our comments section below.
