The Hollywood Foreign Press Association just revealed next year’s Golden Globes nominations and they’re the most diverse in recent years. From emerging actors to decorated veterans, multiple players in show business received recognition from one of the most prestigious awards show in the industry. Tim Allen, Dakota Fanning, and Susan Kelechi Watson presented the nominations recently.
Notable nominees within the acting categories include Eddie Murphy and Jennifer Lopez. The former came back after a three-year hiatus from the movies with his role on the remake, “Dolemite Is My Name“. His performance earned him a nomination for the ‘Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’ award. Meanwhile, Lopez, whose performance in “Hustlers” has gotten a lot of Oscar Buzz, got nominated for the ‘Best Performance by a Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama’ award. But perhaps, the most competitive awards is that of the ‘Best Original Song’. Here, the likes of Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, and Elton John all got nominated.
The big favorite to win is Beyoncé’s “Spirit” for “The Lion King,”. Having already been nominated in the Golden Globes before—both for acting and original song categories—she knows what it’s like to be in this game. In the “live-action” remake of the 1994 animated classic, the songstress voiced Nala, the protagonist Simba’s love interest. In order to further promote the film, she crafted a special soundtrack, “Lion King: The Gift,” which also featured artists from Africa. Apart from the nominated track, another song, “Brown Skin Girl” also rose in popularity. It features the singer’s daughter, Blue Ivy Carter, for the first time.
One of the ore recently-dropped nominated songs was “Beautiful Ghosts,”. Written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Taylor Swift, the new track became a new addition to the already-classic roster of songs in “Cats” the musical. For the play’s upcoming film adaptation, the pair wrote the song for Francesca Hayward and Judi Dench. But Swift also performs her own rendition of the song for the closing credits. Having won multiple Grammy awards, next year marks the first time the HPFA nominated Swift for a Golden Globe award. And, quite possibly, for an Academy Award as well.
As for Elton John, who trumps the first two in terms of his number of accolades, “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” comes after a string of nominated and awarded original songs in various movies. Co-written by his decades-long songwriting partner, Bernie Taupin, the song appears in “Rocketman,” his own musical biopic. The film features most of his iconic hits, it’s only this track that’s totally new. Taron Egerton, who plays John in the film, performs the song in the movie. He also earned a nomination in the ‘Best Performance by a Lead Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy’ category.
The 77th Golden Globes will broadcast live from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California, on January 5, 2020. British comedian Ricky Gervais will return as host of the evening. Stay tuned that night to see which of these high-profile artists will win!
