Heads up! The 2020 Grammy nominations are up and young artists are leading in many ways. The likes of Lizzo, Billie Eilish, and Lil Nas X all have the most number of nominations for next year’s ceremony. Lizzo has eight in total while the latter two follow up with six nominations respectively. Notably, this is the first time these three artists have been nominated for the prestigious award. Their most famous hits have arguably dominated the charts this past year. Lil Nas X even broke a world record the year. He stayed atop Billboard’s Hot 100 charts for 17 consecutive weeks with “Old Town Road,”. It’s also important to note that within their nominations, both Lizzo and Lil Nas X are also up for the night’s biggest awards. They include Record, Album, Song, and Best New Artist of the Year awards. This is the first time that two artists simultaneously earned nominations for all four awards within the same year.
Add to that the fact that Billie Eilish, who just exploded onto the scene this year with her chart-topping album, “When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” is the youngest artist to ever be nominated for a Grammy. At age 17 (though she will be 18 by The Grammys), she’s already released an album that has topped the charts five times and a number one single. “I never thought it would be a reality in my life. I grew up watching the Grammys with my family and I would judge all the girls’ dresses and all the dudes’ suits. To think about sitting in a room with, like, every person I grew up idolizing,” she shared. Making more history is Rosalía, another newcomer from Spain. She stands as the first Best New Artist nominee whose songs are mostly in Spanish. It’s a big new step forward into embracing songs that are Spanish or in fact any other language. Usually, the Academy held a separate ceremony, The Latin Grammy Awards, in recognizing Spanish songs. In fact, they still hold that annual event until now. Rosalía’s nomination, however, signals a new era in the Grammys. One that seeks to be more inclusive and more international that’s right up with that the music industry wants to pursue.
In fact, a lot of people have noted that the 2020 nominations show that the Recording Academy is finally paying attention to the current climate in the music industry. With its diverse and notably young round-up of nominees, the Academy seems to make everyone aware that they themselves are aware of how the scene is changing. Through the years, even in recent Grammy Awards, established caucasian artists mostly dominated the awards. Now, it looks like musicians from all colors and creeds are getting their due at next year’s ceremony. What do you think of the 2020 Grammy nominations?
