Everyone knows that Martin Garrix is one of the best DJs in the world. But this past weekend, at the MTV Europe Music Awards 2019, that face became all the more undeniable. The young Dutch DJ won the Best Electronic Category award during the event, becoming one of the youngest producers to ever have won the award.

This year, he won against the likes of The Chainsmokers, Calvin Harris, DJ Snake, and Marshmello for the award. Though he didn’t attend the event himself, he did provide a video message thanking both MTV and the fans for giving him the award and all their support. Furthermore, the EDM star also shared a thank you post on Instagram. “Thank you @mtvema and everybody who voted. I’m sorry I couldn’t be there this year but your support means the world to me! +x” he captioned the post with. Garrix, at the time, spent the weekend in Wuhan, China for a big gig.

Recently, Garrix has been experiencing a career-high. Also this past weekend, he unveiled his latest single, “Used To Love,” featuring Dean Lewis. The track sounds distinctly consistent with what he’s been releasing as of late. Not full-on rave music, per se, but feel-good tracks. While the DJs strong and upbeat rhythms carry the song through, Lewis’s emotional harmonies and melodic vocals reign supreme here. With the overall simplicity of the track, it almost sounds like old-school Garrix—the type of songs that helped propel him to fame all those years ago. It’s no wonder then that he won the MTV award against some pretty big-named EDM heavyweights.

Though even before he won the award, various entities already recognized Garrix as a top-tier DJ of this generation. DJ Mag famously ranked him as the top name in their “Top 100 DJs” list back in 2018. But Garrix, surprisingly, didn’t regard such a feat all that impressive.

“I really don’t care, the so-called world ranking. I am at 1, yes. And Tiësto is very many places below me. That doesn’t make sense, does it? I started playing music through him. I am not a better DJ than him, maybe now I just have a bit more hype around me. By the way, there are also people in that list from whom I have never heard of, so I have my doubts about the creation.” he shared about the ranking. Ultimately, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike replaced the young DJ at the top spot in DJ Mag’s 2019 list.

For now, what’s keeping Garrix busy and excited is his newest gig: creating the official theme for the UEFA Euro 2020 championships. The quarterly football championships have served as one of the biggest athletic events in Europe. This new gig gives Garrix one of his biggest platforms yet. “It’s crazy to think that UEFA EURO 2020 will be held across 12 different cities, but it’s the perfect way to celebrate 60 years of this incredible competition. Music is my passion, but I’m also a huge football fan, so it’s extra special for me to be able to create the official song for what will be the biggest EURO in history,” he relayed.  Congratulations to Martin Garrix for winning the MTV Europe Music Award for Best Electronic Music of 2018-2019.
