It’s a team that no one saw coming. Major Lazer has teamed up with singer Khalid for a new track included in the PS4 game’s soundtrack, “Death Stranding“. Called Trigger, the single harkens back to the trio’s smooth and rhythmic roots. While Khalid’s strong vocals enhance the slightly exotic sound.
Lyrically, the song talks about the impending end of a relationship. Even if one of them tries hard to work on it, when the significant other is doing too much harm to the union, there’s no choice but to end it. “I’ve been holding on. Holding on to nothing. You don’t care too much and it’s obvious you’re gone. So unleash your weapon, aim it at my chest.” Khalid sings.
In the chorus, the singer chides the partner into breaking it up swiftly, akin to how a bullet can kill in an instant. “If our love is a drug, you’re the one with the trigger. Shoot me down, shoot me down, I don’t want to remember. I don’t wanna remember. Don’t try to change your mind, the blood is in your hands.” the chorus says.
While the song has its own strong beats, it’s not the rave-ready track the group has been trotting out recently. The single sound suitable for the nature of its release—for a video game soundtrack. It has a chill enough vibe that gamers would want to listen to while playing the game. And its dramatic lyrics may possibly allude to the story of the video game itself. Furthermore, Major Lazer isn’t the only musical act that contributed tracks for the game’s soundtrack. Others include Alan Walker, The Neighborhood, Flora Cash, and MISSIO, among others. A bit more notably than the soundtrack, the video game’s characters resemble some well-known celebrities. Actors Norman Reedus, Léa Seydoux, Mads Mikkelsen, Lindsay Wagner and more provided their likeness and voices for the game. It’s as if the game itself is a movie starring all these stars. Comedian and late-night talk show host Conan O’Brien also makes a cameo in the game. And in fact, game designer Hideo Kojima even asked him personally if he wanted to be in the game. O’Brien showed the whole process in one of the episodes of his show. So gamers will see the comedic talk show host in the game.
As for Major Lazer, they still have yet to reveal when they plan to drop their upcoming final album, “Lazerism”. It will serve as their fourth studio album and their last before officially disbanding. Founding member Jillionaire left the group earlier this year to focus on solo activities, marking the first sign of their already impending end. And Diplo is even already teasing that he plans to reunite with Skrillex to bring back their side project, Jack Ü. So there are already a lot of signs that Major Lazer will end, but they have yet to announce when they drop their very last release. “Death Stranding” will drop this November 8, 2019. Stay tuned on this space for more news and updates.
