The rift between NBA superstar-turned-DJ Shaquille ‘Shaq’ O’Neal and Portland Trail Blazers point guard Damian Lillard just got more intense. The former, known in music as both ‘DJ Diesel,’ released a hip hop track that disses the latter, and even names him explicitly in it. Entitled “Second Round Freestyle,” it’s an explosive new single that’s got everybody, both in sports and music, talking.
Listen to Shaq’s “Second Round Freestyle” below:
Shaq didn’t hold back in this second diss track geared towards Dame D.O.L.L.A. (Lillard’s rapper name). “All my statues and retired jerseys, I’mma live forever! Better now or never. Kill Damian, my pleasure! You see him losing every year, nobody do it better!” the NBA legend rapped. He further retaliated against Lillard claiming that O’Neal only rose to prominence in his LA Lakers years thanks to Kobe Bryant. “That little Kobe comment you said had me grinning! Three times MVP, Dame, at least I’m winning. First of all, little boy, you see this ain’t beef, you just a bi*** talking while I’m hitting, call it a queef,” he rhymed.
In later verses, Shaq not only threw shade at Lillard’s style, but he also made him known his own power within the NBA machine. He rapped, “And you shoot too much. Dudes on your team probably hate it! Keep talking, make a phone call and get you traded. You probably chose zero because you thought it was hot. You ain’t hard because in real life, you dress like a thot,“. It’s clear the sports icon isn’t happy with what the young NBA superstar. Perhaps in the history of the NBA, none have seen a hip hop rivalry quite like this. Bot O’Neal and Lillard are tried-and-tested rappers, with Shaq having succeeded with such a venture already around 20 years ago. But now, Lillard is changing the game, giving his rap career the same amount of focus and effort as his NBA career. Not only has the young superstar opened his own music label, Front Page Music, but he just also release his latest album. “Big D.O.L.L.A.”. The release features other hip hop heavyweights such as Mozzy, Lil Wayne, and Jeremih.
Meanwhile, Shaq himself is killing it in another genre: EDM. Known as ‘DJ Diesel,’ he has since risen to prominence from his many gigs and performances. But don’t let his playful persona fool you, he’s dead serious about being a DJ. “In the celebrity DJ world, they’re not really that good, but what people don’t understand about me, is I’ve been DJing since 12 years old so I’m used to it,” he admitted in an interview with Page Six. “I know being Shaq helps, I really do know that, but that’s why I wanted to do it like all the other DJs do: start from the bottom.” For now, Damian Lillard has yet to comment on Shaq’s latest diss track. But he surely won’t take it lying down. With a dew months before NBA season starts, expect Dame D.O.L.L.A. to hit back hard. Stay tuned on this space for more updates!
