Frank Ocean going EDM? According to his latest interview, he is! Or at least, techno music reportedly inspired his new music. The queer singer-songwriter recently admitted that’s currently working on new music. He also hinted that fans should expect a totally different sound from him soon. Though he didn’t however, reveal when he plans to release this album. In an interview with W magazine, Ocean revealed that he was inspired by a classic American EDM for his latest record. He told the publication’s Diane Solway that “Detroit, Chicago, techno, house, French electronic…” inspired his new music. He also shared that he’s always been influenced by this sector of the music industry. “I’ve been interested in club, and the many different iterations of nightlife for music and songs. ” he shared. “I grew up in New Orleans, so the closest to the nightlife scene for me was New Orleans bounce, and that was a lot of trends. But it’s so much a part of my childhood and my youth that I don’t really go back to it so much as a touchpoint. I’m really looking forward. It’s kind of a mix for me.”
Ocean also relayed, in the same interview, what new themes and ideas fans should expect from his new music. “I believed for a very long time that there was strength in vulnerability, and I really don’t believe that anymore. “Strength” and “vulnerability” sound opposite as words. And so to combine them sounds wise, but I don’t know if it is wise. It’s just this realization that hit me: “Oh, right, it’s a choice whether you will be truthful or a liar.” If I start to tell a story and then I decide not to tell the story anymore, I can stop. It’s my story.” he stated. “The expectation for artists to be vulnerable and truthful is a lot, you know?—when it’s no longer a choice. Like, in order for me to satisfy expectations, there needs to be an outpouring of my heart or my experiences in a very truthful, vulnerable way. I’m more interested in lies than that. Like, give me a full motion-picture fantasy.” He continued on to admit that music has exponentially shaped his life. “It was a driver to get out of the neighborhood. I remember feeling no attachment to music necessarily, more an attachment to what music could bring if I succeeded, you know, financially. And that meant freedom from my situation at the time, and maybe what I was projecting onto my own future.” he admitted.
Though the notion of Ocean venturing into EDM seems a little out there, taking on different genres is nothing new to this singer-songwriter. In fact, his play on different genres catapulted his rise in the music industry. He has long blended and converged R&B, hip hop, soul, and rock music together to create stunning tracks. So much so that his debut album, “Channel Orange,” earned six Grammy award nominations when he released it back in 2012. Though he didn’t win of them, that was a feat in of itself for a young black male artist at the time.
For now, there’s no word yet as to when Ocean plans to drop his upcoming album. Stay tuned on this space for more updates! Image Credits:
