It takes a lot to dethrone a record-breaking song, but Billie Eilish somehow managed to do it. Her spring single, “bad guy” now tops Billboard‘s Hot 100 Singles chart. Despite having released it four months ago, it takes over the top spot from Lil Nas X‘s “Old Town Road” remix with Billy Ray Cyrus, which enjoyed 19 consecutive weeks at number one.

Watch the music video for Billie Eilish’s “bad guy” below:

“bad guy” has become an anthem of sorts for a lot of the youth. The lyrics explore a toughness and confidence (borderline cockiness) about confronting a ‘bad guy’ which, in Eilish’s lyrical case, is a former lover. The song itself touches on an amalgamation of different genres, bordering on pop-trap, nu-goth pop, and even a tinge of 90s underground EDM. Its pace is also decidedly slow, with the first half starting the song off on medium speed before slowing it down even further for the second half. The track itself is unlike anything people have heard before which might be why it’s so successful.

Ultimately, the single marks the first time the 18-year-old singer-songwriter topped the iconic singles chart. But her debut album, “WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” has topped Billboard’s Hot 200 Albums chart more than once in early 2019. Though it’s important to note that, even if Eilish has released the single months ago, it’s no surprise it achieved reaching the number one spot. For the past nine weeks, “bad guy” has been enjoying the top two spot right under “Old Town Road”. It was only a matter of time before the track got to number one, regardless if people were skeptical about such a feat. Unsurprisingly, it’s Eilish’s biggest song this year. She’s performed it live in her biggest gigs, such as Coachella, Glastonbury, and her 2019 “When We All Fall Asleep” tour. Just last month, she released an official remix of the song featuring Justin Bieber. Many thought and hoped that his inclusion on the track would skyrocket the single to the top of the chart. That was, after all, how Billy Ray Cyrus helped Lil Nas X with his song. In fact, it was also Justin Bieber’s remix of Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s “Despacito” that held the previous record of most number of consecutive week atop the Hot 100 list. But alas, it didn’t help throughout these past nine weeks. Eilish’s own original solo version was what inevitably topped the chart.

Still, what Eilish achieved is quite a feat. She’s the first-ever artist born in the 21st century to top the legendary singles chart. And for her to beat the musical juggernaut that was “Old Town Road” was commendable in of itself. Lil Nas X even responded to her achievement on social media. On the former, he tweeted, “congratulations to billie eilish!! u deserve this!!”. While on Instagram, he posted a screenshot from the music video with the caption, “this is the first week in 5 months old town road hasn’t been number 1. this journey had taught me so much! can’t wait for y’all to see what’s next. panini official music video coming soon. i love y’all!!! 🤩🤩🤩”.
