Following the success of their annual summer event, Tomorrowland just announced the official dates of their next Winter edition. They plan to hold their early 2020 festival from March 14 to 22 next year. They’ll also bring the festival back to the Alpe d’Huez Grand Domaine Ski resort. Despite this announcement, however, they have yet to reveal who will headline this snow-filled spectacle. Fans are already speculating that since the festival recently celebrated their 15th-year anniversary, the DJs from their Summer event might return for the Winter edition. EDM Festival mainstays like Armin Van Buuren, Martin Garrix, and Steve Aoki—all of whom played at Tomorrowland 2019—might headline Tomorrowland Winter as well. All three also played at this year’s Winter event as well, which was its first-ever edition. It had the theme “The Hymn of the Frozen Lotus”. For now, there’s no word yet as to next year’s theme.
Eventually, Tomorrowland seeks to make their Winter edition an annual event and as successful as their standard Summer festival. It’s the first EDM congregation of its kind that takes place in the mountains and held specifically during the cold season. Usually, music festivals of the genre take place during the summer, when it’s the perfect season for endless partying and wild raves. Most of today’s beloved music festivals take place in either the spring or summer seasons. They include the likes of Ultra Miami, Coachella, Glastonbury, and even their main Tomorrowland event. But following the success of their first run last March, it’s safe to say that Tomorrowland Winter may have started a new precedent for EDM festivals. This time around, however, all eyes are especially on the Belgian organizers. They recently drew a lot of criticism after news outlets reported that some of the festival’s staff sold drugs. According to VTM News, an anonymous employee revealed that his co-worker actively sold drugs to attendees. “He had 36 pills, 4 grams of coke, 6 grams of speed and 4 grams of ketamine.” he shared. The employee also admitted that security was stricter on the attendees going in and out of the festival. But for the staff, not so much. In fact, they’d only check the employees during set-up and wrap-up times but not during the festival itself.
Ultimately, it was reported that around 61 dealers and 460 users were caught during Tomorrowland 2019. Meanwhile, the number of apprehended employees is yet to be determined. With over 10,000 personnel, it’s become increasingly difficult for authorities to look out for those who peddle drugs during one of the busiest festivals of the year. But following such a report, it’s also possible that they’re now more prepared to look out for drug usage and selling during Tomorrowland Winter. And since the location is relatively smaller than in Boom, Belgium, it’s easier for security to check each and every person, be they an employee or attendee, for drugs. Tomorrowland Winter 2020 will take place from March 14 to 21, 2020. Pre-registration already started yesterday. Tickets will start selling on September 14, 2019, particularly for four-day passes. Seven-day passes, on the other hand, will go on sale starting September 21, 2019.
