After releasing multiple teasers on Instagram, Katy Perry finally dropped her latest single, “Small Talk”. She unveiled it via a lyric video that featured an adorable narrative with a young couple. It’s her second original release this year, following her early summer hit, “Never Really Over”. The new track was reportedly co-written and co-produced by singer-songwriter Charlie Puth

Watch the lyric video for “Small Talk” below:

The new single talks about the animosity between two people who just broke up. It highlights the fact that two people, who used to be each other’s ‘everything’ now only engage “small talk” from time to time. Even though they’ve seen, felt, and been with each other for a moment in time, now that they’ve broken up, they’re back to being strangers. The lyric video, which almost acts as an official music video, emphasized the message more with its own story. It features a young couple—co-workers at an office—who seem to have broken up. They play out the lyrics comically and exaggeratedly.

Many fans and critics see this, as well as “Never Really Over,” as a return to form for Perry. After her 2017 album, “Witness,” failed to top the charts and was considered a commercial failure, the “Teenage Dreams” singer went back to her rhythmic pop roots. It’s the same type of bop-inducing tunes that garnered her success from the late 2000s to the early 2010s. “Perry has recovered the top-level songcraft that both her fans and general pop enthusiasts have been craving for years, a return to form for an artist who spent the better part of this decade’s first half dominating the mainstream.” Billboard‘s Jason Lipshutz wrote. With the success of her latest singles, Perry has been having quite a year so far! Just last February, she got engaged to long-time beau, Orlando Bloom. And this past spring, she enjoyed a relatively successful run as one of the judges on ABC’s revived TV singing competition, “American Idol“. She’s the highest-paid among all three judges, which also includes country singer Luke Bryan and legendary R&B star Lionel Richie. They’re all slated to return for the show’s upcoming 18th season, which will premiere in 2020. The new season will serve as her third season as a judge in the beloved reality TV contest.

Recently, she also patched things up with former rival Taylor Swift. They confirmed it via their social media posts. Perry even made a cameo in the latter’s latest music video, “You Need To Calm Down“. Here, she donned her famous hamburger outfit from this year’s Met Gala. Swift, on the other hand, wore a ‘french fries’ outfit. Both songstresses hugged it out in a fast-food friendship sort of way.

Now, the “California Girls” singer says she’s open to really collaborate with Swift soon, not just make a cameo in each other’s videos. “I think she’s really intelligent, there are lots of layers to her. You know, I get the singles, a lot of people know us from the singles but when you dig deep, there’s depth.” Perry shared of her fellow pop star. Katy Perry’s “Small Talk” is now available on various online platforms, such as Spotify and Apple Music. As of now, she has yet to share if she’s planning to release all her singles in an EP or a new full album. Stay tuned for updates!
