Lil Nas X did it! The rapper officially broke the record for the longer-running number 1 hit on Billboard‘s Hot 100 singles chart this week. His remix of “Old Town Road” with Billy Ray Cyrus has enjoyed the top spot for 17 consecutive weeks now, a week longer than previous record-holders of years past.

Prior to this feat, two previous chart-toppers held the record. Both Mariah Carey‘s “One Sweet Day” featuring Boyz II Men and Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee‘s remix of “Despacito” featuring Justin Bieber simultaneously tied for the record for a time. The two singles both enjoyed 16 consecutive weeks atop the famous Billboard chart. Eventually, Céline Dion‘s “Because You Loved Me” and Taylor Swift‘s “Look What You Made Me Do” kicked both singles off the top spot. Meanwhile, Lil Nas X’s own chart-topper doesn’t seem to have any competition as of yet. It’s also possible a different remix might replace it as the next number one hit.

While other songs were close, especially “Despacito,” the record Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus broke was held famously by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men. The feel-good anthem about losing a loved one held the record for about 24 years; simultaneously with “Despacito” for 2 years. As a result, both the rapper and the songstress have messaged each other on social media about it. Lil Nas X even invited Carey to remix “Old Time Road” with him, to which she jokingly replied that they should just merge the two singles together instead.  When news broke of the young rapper’s latest feat, Maria Carey took her Twitter to congratulate him. “Sending love & congrats to @LilNasX on breaking one of the longest-running records in music history! We’ve been blessed to hold this record with a song that means a great deal to @BoyzIIMen and myself and has touched so many. Keep living your best life!” she shared. Upon seeing the tweet, Lil Nas X replied, ” “wowwww thank you so much mariah! you are a legend and an icon and i’m blessed to even have you acknowledging me right now! growing up to your music & now having you talk to me directly is unreal! ❤️❤️❤️”

The rapper has been vocal about artists remixing his famous hit. The new record-holding track it itself, a remix of Lil Nas X’s original solo single. Just recently, the rapper also collaborated with BTS‘ RM, the lead rapper of the world-famous K-pop boy group, for a new remix, “Seoul Town Road”. Due to the massive fanbase of both artists, it’s highly likely this might replace the Billy Ray Cyrus remix as the next chart-topper. Other notable artists who also remixed the single include Diplo, Young Thug & Mason Ramsey, and fellow rapper Cupcakke. Subsequently, Lil Nas X was also open about wanting these remixes to help break the record he now holds.
