Big Brother is back! Kanye West just dropped his latest single, “Brothers” as part of BET series “Tales” soundtrack. R&B singer Charlie Wilson joins him on the track that harkens back to the rapper’s “Graduation” days in the late 2000s. Additionally, it’s West’s first original release since “I Love It” with Lil Pump back in September 2018.The track features West going back to his rhythmic roots, with rhymes that are in-line with the inspirational nature of the episode. He even sings part of the single, aided by Wilson’s soulful melodies. It has a bit of a Gospel tinge to it which also goes in-line with the type of music the rapper is currently producing nowadays. But what makes this song unique is the blending of both old and new Kanye. The Kanye that rose to prominence with his sick beats and electric vibe and the Kanye that’s at the top of his game right now.
Record producer and executive Irv “Gotti” Lorenzo produced the song. In an interview with TMZ, he shared that it took about two years to make this single. “I worked on this record for close to two years. Over a year and a half.” he shared. As the producer of “Tales,” he also relayed that this single is the first original track that an episode was based on. “As you guys know, with “Tales,” I take existing songs and turn them into, like, a movie.” he shared. He continued, “So when I approached Kanye back in October of 2017, I was like, ‘Yo, I wanna do something special for the culture. I love the hip hop culture. I’m a huge, like, believer in the hip hop culture. What a wonderful thing it is. And I just wanted to do this for the culture. I know that sounds cliche but it’s honest.”
Furthermore, Lorenzo also noted Kanye’s willingness and enthusiasm to do this project with him. “Yo, let’s give ‘em a new song, man. Let’s give ‘em a new song and I’m gonna make a two-hour movie to the song. It will be the season premiere,” he remembered telling the rapper. “And, you know, Kanye wrote it out with me man. He was like ‘this is a great thing!’”
“Tales” is an anthology series made by Lorenzo that premiered back in 2017. The show takes classic and current hip hop tracks and makes them into lengthy episodes. In the first season alone, their episodes were inspired by the likes of N.W.A.’s “Fu** The Police,” The Notorious B.I.G.’s “I Got a Story to Tell,” and Jay-Z’s “99 Problems”. For the second season, apart from Kanye’s new track, they’re looking to use more current hip hop songs as inspirations. They’ll include Cardi-B’s “Bodak Yellow” and Migos and Gucci Mane’s “Slippery,” among many others. Oftentimes, they touch on African-American sub-cultures and social issues facing minorities in the United States today.
“Tales” season 2 premiered on BET last July 2, 2019. As for “Brothers” by Kanye West ft. Charlie Wilson, you can stream it now on the network’s official website and their ‘BET NOW’ app.
