Talk about a comeback! Future’s latest EP, “Save Me,” debuts at No. 5 on Billboard’s Hot 200 albums chart. Though it’s not as great a feat as his chart-topping “The WZRD” last January, it’s still an impressive comeback considering the stiff competition. This time, he had to go up against The Jonas Brothers, Santana, and Billie Eilish. The rapper achieved the commendable debut with over 42,000 equivalent units sold. 5,000 of them were actual album sales. Yet even despite the feat, critics were divided with the new record. Rolling Stone scored it with 3.5 stars out of 5, with writer Christopher Weingarten sharing, “a fascinating “what if” scenario, a more experimental Future working within modern rap techniques and pushing their boundaries to the blurry edges.” Reed Jackson of Pitchfork, on the other hand, was less sympathetic. “The EP proves he’s still a master of melancholic detail, but thematically and sonically, the Atlanta superstar has hit a wall.” he wrote online.
Subsequently, it’s been a great week for both the Jonas Brothers and Billie Eilish. The former topped the charts with “Happiness Begins,” their first release as a band again in over a decade. With over 414,000 equivalent album units sold, they ousted Ariana Grande’s “thank u, next” as this year’s biggest sold album in its first week so far. The latter, on the other hand, is still enjoying a top 2 spot with “WHEN WE FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?” since releasing it last March. Meanwhile, Santana’s “Africa Speaks” debuts at no. 3 and Luke Combs’s “The Prequel” takes the fourth spot respectively.
