Fans who’ve always wanted to see Zayn Malik as a Disney Prince just got their wish—kind of. The former One Direction-member-turned-solo-artist recently released his own sultry R&B version of “A Whole New World,” as a promotional single for the upcoming live-action version of the beloved Disney animated film, Aladdin. Featuring Zhavia Ward as “Jasmine,” the song is set to be the film’s end-titles similarly to Peabo Bryan and Regina Belle’s own pop version back in 1992.
With this rendition, Malik and Ward join the ranks of other top performers who’ve released their own versions of Disney’s beloved songs. They include Lana Del Rey, who reinterpreted Sleeping Beauty’s “Once Upon A Dream” into a haunting hymn for the 2014 film Maleficent, and Ariana Grande and John Legend with their feel-good pop version of “Beauty and the Beast” for the titular film’s 2017 remake.
Furthermore, since the likes of Beyonce Knowles and Donald Glover lent their voices for the upcoming live-action Lion King film to premiere later this year, fans are already expecting their own rendition of “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” will be a major hit as well!
The single’s music video premiered on DisneyMusic Vevo’s account on May 9, 2019, and instantly went viral. As of May 13, 2019, it’s still the #1 trending video on YouTube. Fans swooned seeing and listening to Malik belt out that Disney classic love song, many of which noted that it sounded a lot sexier and more seductive this time around. They also noted how soulful the pair sang together, almost akin to Bryan and Belle back in the day.
On Twitter, several people complained that the pop star should have been cast as Aladdin in the first place, and even started campaigning for him to replace Mena Massoud (who’s playing the titular role in the film) as the lead star if there were to be a sequel.
Apart from Massoud, the film also stars Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar, and Will Smith as the Genie. It’s set to premiere on May 24, 2019.
