Celebrities venturing into fashion design has always been tricky business. They’re commonly criticized for relying too much on star power and name recognition instead of actual design talent. But when a big luxury group takes notice, the fashion industry will too, which is why Rihanna’s new partnership with the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton group is a game-changer! Her new Fenty fashion line has officially launched!

With this new venture, Rihanna became the first woman of color to start her own fashion house with the luxury retail behemoth. She’s also the first eponymous designer to open her own label with them since Christian Lacroix back in 1987. Her fashion line, entitled Fenty, will have ready-to-wear, accessories, footwear, and of course, the already-successful make-up line, Fenty Beauty. Though the entity has already released fashion collections before via a collaboration with sportswear brand Puma, this new label will focus more on luxury streetwear instead of just activewear.

“Designing a line like this with LVMH is an incredibly special moment for us. Mr. Arnault has given me a unique opportunity to develop a fashion house in the luxury sector, with no artistic limits. I couldn’t imagine a better partner both creatively and business-wise, and I’m ready for the world to see what we have built together.” the artist-turned-designer shared in an official statement. Her brand will be based in Paris and is expected to debut at Paris Fashion Week for Spring 2020 later this October.

As Fenty house ultimately comes into fruition, Rihanna joins the ranks of Hedi Slimane, Clare Weight Keller, and Nicolas Ghesquière—some of the biggest names in fashion—as designers working under LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton group. And along with Virgil Abloh, the creative director of Louis Vuitton menswear, she’s one of only two people of color leading a brand from the luxury retail giant.
