Famous for her “White Chicks” hit, A Thousand Miles, and other early noughties anthems such as Ordinary Day and Pretty Baby, Vanessa Carlton makes a surprising career move this 2019: Broadway star! The 2000s pop icon was recently tapped to lead star in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” this summer, starting from June 27, 2019, and will go on a 10-week run at the Stephen Sondheim Theatre in New York City. Here, she’ll play another music icon, Carole King, whose life the show chronicles fro her early songwriting days in the 1970s.
She announced her upcoming Broadway debut with an Instagram post back in May. 8, 2019. “It is a privilege to tell Carole’s story. She wasn’t just a great pianist and writer, she was on the frontier of women in power positions in the music industry,” Carlton shared in an official press statement shortly after.
Carlton has large shoes to fill as prominent Broadway stars have played the lead character on-stage. This includes Supergirl star Melissa Benoist and Jessie Mueller, who originated the role back when it first opened in 2014. Mueller even won her first Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical with her performance. In the play, Carlton will belt out various Carolie King hits that make up this Jukebox musical, including classics such as You’ve Got a Friend, (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman, and the titular song, Beautiful.
Prior to this career-change, Carlton released her last album back in 2015, entitled Liberman. it was er fifth-studio album to date and ranked #32 in Billboard’s US Independent Albums chart. That same year, she gave birth to her first child, a daughter named Sidney.
